Burnout

A state of chronic workplace stress leading to physical and emotional exhaustion.

Full Definition

Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. Recognized by the WHO as an occupational phenomenon, burnout is caused by prolonged exposure to excessive workload, lack of control, insufficient recognition, and poor work-life balance. HR teams can identify at-risk employees through engagement surveys, absence patterns, and performance data, then intervene with workload adjustment, support resources, and flexible working.
