Statutory Leave

Leave entitlements mandated by law that employers must provide to all eligible employees.

Full Definition

Statutory leave refers to leave entitlements that are required by law — as opposed to contractual or enhanced leave that employers choose to offer. Statutory leave types vary by country but commonly include annual leave, sick leave, maternity leave, paternity leave, shared parental leave, and public holidays. Employers cannot offer less than the statutory minimum — though they can enhance entitlements contractually. HR software is pre-configured with statutory leave rules for each jurisdiction and ensures all employees receive their legal minimum.
