Upskilling

Developing employees' existing skills to a higher level to meet evolving demands.

Full Definition

Upskilling is the process of providing employees with training and development to enhance and advance their existing skills, enabling them to take on more complex tasks or progress in their career. Unlike reskilling (which involves entirely new skills), upskilling builds on what employees already know. With rapid technological change, upskilling has become a strategic priority — particularly in digital literacy, data analysis, and management skills. Organizations with strong upskilling programmes see improved performance, engagement, and internal promotion rates.
