Absence Rate

The percentage of scheduled working days lost to employee absence.

Full Definition

Absence rate (also called Bradford Factor score context) measures the total number of working days lost to absence as a percentage of total available working days. Formula: (Total absence days ÷ Total possible working days) × 100. The UK average absence rate is approximately 2.5–3.5 days per employee per year. Organizations use absence rate data to benchmark against industry averages, identify departments with above-average absence, and measure the impact of wellbeing initiatives.
