Bereavement Leave

Paid or unpaid leave granted to employees following the death of a close relative.

Full Definition

Bereavement leave (also called compassionate leave) allows employees time off work to grieve and deal with practical matters following the death of a family member or close friend. In the UK, employees are entitled to a "reasonable" amount of unpaid time off to deal with an emergency involving a dependent. Many employers offer more generous bereavement policies — typically 3–5 days paid leave for an immediate family member. HRMZY allows HR teams to configure custom bereavement leave policies.
