Compressed Working Week

Working full-time hours in fewer than five days per week.

Full Definition

A compressed working week is a flexible work arrangement in which an employee works their contracted full-time hours over fewer than the standard five days — most commonly a four-day week (e.g. four 10-hour days). The 4-day working week has gained significant attention following successful trials in Iceland, Japan, and the UK, with studies reporting maintained or improved productivity alongside significant employee wellbeing benefits. HR policies must address overtime implications, client service coverage, and shift pattern variations.
