Right to Work

A legal check confirming an employee is permitted to work in a specific country.

Full Definition

Right to work checks are a legal obligation on employers to verify that every employee has the right to work in the country before employment begins. In the UK, employers must check original documents (e.g. passport, visa, share code) or use the Home Office online checking service for biometric residence permit holders. Employing someone without the right to work can result in fines of up to £60,000 per illegal worker and criminal prosecution. HR software automates right to work document collection, stores evidence, and alerts HR when documents are approaching expiry.
