Return to Work

The process of supporting an employee back to work after a period of absence.

Full Definition

Return to work (RTW) refers to the process of supporting an employee in returning to their role after a period of absence — whether due to long-term sickness, maternity/paternity leave, or injury. Effective RTW processes include return-to-work interviews, phased return arrangements (gradually increasing hours), occupational health assessments, workplace adjustments, and ongoing support. HR software automates RTW reminders, tracks phased return schedules, and ensures managers receive timely prompts to support returning employees.
