At-Will Employment

US employment doctrine allowing either party to end employment at any time.

Full Definition

At-will employment is a US legal doctrine under which either the employer or the employee can terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any reason (except for illegal reasons), without notice or severance. Most US states follow the at-will doctrine. However, exceptions exist for employees with written contracts, union members, and terminations that violate public policy or anti-discrimination laws. HR software helps US employers document termination decisions to protect against wrongful dismissal claims.
