Offboarding

The process of managing an employee's departure from the organization.

Full Definition

Offboarding is the formal process of managing an employee's departure from an organization — whether through resignation, retirement, redundancy, or termination. A structured offboarding process includes conducting exit interviews, revoking system access, recovering company assets, processing final pay, issuing reference letters, and transferring knowledge to remaining team members. Good offboarding protects the organization legally, maintains positive relationships with departing employees, and preserves institutional knowledge.
