Zero Tolerance Policy

A workplace policy that applies consistent, strict consequences for specific violations.

Full Definition

A zero-tolerance policy is a workplace rule that mandates automatic, non-negotiable consequences — typically immediate dismissal — for specific, serious violations regardless of circumstances or mitigating factors. Common zero-tolerance areas include physical violence, sexual harassment, fraud, theft, and serious drug or alcohol violations at work. While providing clarity and consistency, zero-tolerance policies must be carefully drafted to avoid inflexibility that may lead to unfair dismissal claims in cases with genuine mitigating circumstances. HR must document and communicate zero-tolerance policies clearly in the employee handbook.
