The short version
These two products are rarely a genuine either/or, because they are built for different
payroll jurisdictions. The comparison people actually need is not which is better —
it is which one operates where their employees are, and what each will tell you about
price before you talk to a salesperson.
What each one publishes
This is the clearest practical difference between the two companies, and it is visible
without booking anything.

Sources, all read in a browser on 25 August 2026:
bamboohr.com/pricing,

Both vendors return HTTP 429 to automated fetchers, so these were read manually. Prices change;

Payroll is the real dividing line
BambooHR’s payroll page states that it handles federal, state and local tax filing for
US-based workers, and it carries a question headed “Is BambooHR Payroll only for
US employees?”. Personio goes the other way: personio.com/payroll redirects to
the German site, and the Personio Payroll product page exists in German only.
So if you employ people in the United States, BambooHR can run their payroll and Personio
cannot. If you employ people in Germany, that reverses. If you employ people in several
European countries outside Germany, neither product calculates pay for all of them, and you
should be asking both vendors which of your countries they actually cover before anything else.
Choose BambooHR if…
- Your employees are in the United States and you want HR and payroll from one vendor.
- You want to see a price before you speak to anyone — BambooHR publishes per-employee
rates and a small-team flat rate in English.
- You are under 25 employees and would rather pay one predictable flat monthly amount than a
per-head rate.
- You want the option of month-to-month billing rather than committing to a year.
Choose Personio if…
- You are a German employer and want HR and payroll from one vendor — this is the case
Personio Payroll is built for, and BambooHR does not serve it at all.
- Your HR processes are European and you want software written around them rather than
adapted to them.
- You are comfortable booking a demo to get an English-language quote, or you can read the
German pricing page and work from those figures.
- A 12-month term and a one-off setup fee are acceptable in exchange for that fit.
A third option
We build HRMZY, so treat this section with the scepticism it deserves. It is
here because a comparison that pretends the author has no stake is worse than one that says so.
HRMZY is worth a look only in one specific situation: you want published pricing, like
BambooHR’s, but you are not a US employer, so BambooHR’s payroll is no use to you —
and you are not a German employer either, so Personio Payroll is no use to you. If your
employees are in the US or in Germany, the vendor above that serves your country will
almost certainly fit you better than we will, and we would rather say that here than waste
your evaluation.
Our own rates, and the sourced pricing for both products above, sit side by side on the
comparison page, where every figure carries the vendor
page it came from and the date it was read.
Common questions
You cannot compare them on price alone, because they do not publish on the same basis. BambooHR publishes US dollar rates in English: $10 per employee/month for Core, $17 for Pro and $25 for Elite above 25 employees, and a flat rate starting at $250/mo at 25 employees or fewer. Personio publishes no rate on its English pricing page — it asks you to book a demo — but its German site does publish euro rates, starting at €7.60 per employee/month for HR. Read on 25 August 2026.
Its payroll product is written for US-based employees. BambooHR’s own payroll page says it handles federal, state and local tax filing “for your US-based workers”, and carries a question titled “Is BambooHR Payroll only for US employees?”. If you employ people outside the US, payroll is not the part of BambooHR you would be buying. Read on 25 August 2026.
Germany is where the payroll product lives. personio.com/payroll redirects to the German site, and the Personio Payroll product page is published in German only. Outside Germany, Personio is an HR platform that hands payroll data to a provider rather than calculating pay itself. Read on 25 August 2026.
We do not know, and we are not going to guess at their reasoning. What we can tell you is what each page says today: personio.com/pricing routes every call to action to a demo booking, while personio.de/plaene lists HR from €7.60 per employee/month, payroll from €5, and a combined HR and payroll platform from €14 for organisations under 50 people. Both read on 25 August 2026.
Personio’s German pricing page states a 12-month minimum term for the annual subscription, plus a one-time account setup fee whose size depends on your headcount. BambooHR’s pricing page offers a choice between month-to-month terms and a longer committed term. Read on 25 August 2026.
